is this module essentially a special application of the forms module? Could the enterprising developer do all this with the forms module and execution of SQL procs?

Well both Dynamic Forms and Dynamic Registration really have their own features and possible implementations. There are for sure instances with they integrate with each other on multi form solutions and so forth.

Can the forms module be used on its own with SQL stored procedures for the user info? The simple answer is no... There are features outside the database later that are necessary to setup (such as their encrypted password). Yes you could update their profile information but there are many more features specific to user registration within Dynamic Registration (such as loading all fields with the current users info, ability to hide username for updates, ability to hide password fields for registration updates, auto create username based on a number of scenarios, allow for persistent cookie, etc...

Yes some of the 'form generation' is similar but then you have other areas of both such as 'View Results' for Dynamic Forms VS. 'Manage Users' and so forth for Dynamic Registration (also the ability to edit each users information individually and so forth which you wouldn't be able to do with Dynamic Forms).

Hope this answers your questions.
