We just did our first mailing,,, using Advanced Email v3.00.00 and Opt-In Email v3.10.10 on DNN v 4.07.00.   I got emails to go out, but they went out many times (like 3, some got 4),,, so I just wanted to clarify how the scheduler actually timed things relative to sending out emails.

From what I have read, you set the number of emails to send in a schedule, the time lapse, and retry to whatever you think will work.

We've got just over 2000 emails in our list.  I was hoping to send about 200 every 30 mins, which would take 5 hours to get them all sent, so I set max number to be 250, time lapse to be 30 mins, retry to be 30 mins. run on application start, catch up enabled - which was obviously (after the fact!) wrong.

Would the app take the first 200, send them, then 30 mins later take the next 200, etc. continuously until all the emails have been grabbed and sent?  And since the run wouldn't be done in 30 mins, it must try again and start at the beginning?

Should I have set my retry to be 5 hours?  From reading, I think I now understand that your retry has to be long enough for your campaign to be through? or just long enough that a few groups are sent out?

Sorry for long post, but if I can get a handle around the timing, I will be a very happy camper (as will my recipients).  I have disabled the scheduler for now so I don't keep on sending emails!  In the previous newsletters area, the one newsletter send has sent 4000 copies, another that I tried that I didn't think went through sent 2000.

Hi there...

Yes, let me cover a few 'best practices' for the Opt In Email scheduler:

1. When testing the scheduler the first time, always put the scheduler in test mode and set to go to an email address. This will send all emails to your email, and also provide logs. This will help to make sure no matter what that situations with double emails will never occur.

2. Another good testing method is to create an opt in list that nobody ever sees (since you can define in the opt in email module which opt in lists are available) and add a few test emails to that list.

3. I would default all scheduler options to the default. This means I would set it to be 200 every hour, run on event should be NONE (not application start), and I would also not check the box to catch up. I don't think the retry should matter but I would set it to something far off. So... Recap - x amount every x timeframe but run on None and do not check the catch up box.

Finally, you should be fine to send 250 every 30 minutes but going from the above setup should help to identify how long it takes etc.. Other considerations also matter such as how many emails your SMTP server will allow, your server performance, etc... Enabling a smaller amount the first time should allow you to go to the scheduler and check out how long its taking etc...

Hope this helps!
