Hi All!  Hoping I can get some clarity here and possibly some advice on how to approach a certain scenario for a site I'm working up.  Here it is...

I'm building a site in which the user registers and also establishes a paypal subscription.  I want to give the user the ability to cancel that paypal subscription but remain a member of the site.  The reason is because I want the user to be able to continue to administrate/manage the service provided through my site for the duration of the period they have already paid for.  I want to make sure the paypal subscription is cancelled however.  After the term period ends, I want to automatically remove the user from the role or cancel their site membership all together.

Questions:
* Does PayPal actually take care of collecting recurring payments or does the Dynamic Registrations module somehow do this?

* If I use a question event / completion event to trigger the removal of a role, how do I trigger the cancellation of the PayPal subscription?

* Will the IPN integration act on its own to notify the Dynamic Registration module that a subscription has ended or does it require manual interaction to trigger this?

I'm sure I'll think of additional follow-up questions, but this is probably enough for now.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike,

Lots of very good questions here.

First, let me state that even though your customer signed up with PayPal via your site, your customer's relationship with you is separate from his relationship with PayPal.  That means that if they choose to, they will need to cancel with PayPal directly. If they cancel with PayPal after completing the transaction with you, it should not affect your services at all.  The customer, though, may choose to keep the PayPal account and use it do business at other sites even after the subscription with you has ended.

Secondly, PayPal will process recurring payments.  You will need to define the transaction as a subscription in Dyn Reg and your customer will have to maintain an active account with PayPal.

If the customer is set on a subscription with, let's say, an automatic renewal (recurring charge at the end of a period) BUT his PayPal account is not active, the transaction will just fail or be denied.  You may want to set up completion events or other admin processes for payment failures.

I hope this helps explain what happens between Dyn. Reg and PayPal.  Let us know if you have additional questions, ok?

Thanks,
Candace
