I would really like to have the ability to configure a module to use any SQL database, on any SQL server, for that module. The ability to use a form in relation to a table in a non-dnn database would really increase the functionality of Dynamic Forms greatly.

This connectivity to a non-dnn database could be done by a full connect string in the module config or by using an ODBC DSN, Username and Password.

Most of my customers have large, complex databases that they use in the day to day operation of their businesses. These databases are on various SQL servers and the ability to interact with those dbs from their websites is necessary. To this point, I have had to use existing .asp pages in IFrames to have this interactivity on the sites I have converted to DNN. I really would like to convert all of them and create new Dynamic Forms to replace the older asp technology.

Jim,

Hi. Thanks for your enhancement request, I think that this would b e a great feature for the module. I don't believe this will make the 2.7 release (as its already in beta this week) however we will review adding it for future releases.

One alternative that might provide the functionality you need already would be to setup a 'Linked Server'. We have implemented Dynamic Forms on some custom implementations with requirements similar to what you describe above and (at least in their implementations) setting up and using a Linked Server on the main DNN MSSQL database server solved their problems. You might do a quick google search for 'MS SQL Linked Servers' to find several tutorials and instructions on setting it up.
