I am trying to set up a site for parents/players in a sports team to communicate better.  The idea would be to use the default email field and then have another email field for cell phone numbers for SMS (i.e. 5555555555@mmode.com for ATT).

However, since I dont know how to set up another email field and then create module which use the 2nd email field for SMS, I was thinking a good workaround would be to put 2 emails in the default email field in DNN  (i.e. joe@site.com, 555555555@mmode.com ).  I have changed the verification of the default email address and 2 emails on the default email field works well.

What I would like to do now is use Dynamic Registration to populate the default email field with 2 emails.

I was thinking that I could create 2 other email fields and put them on the registration page.  then DN would put both emails on the default email field (i.e. "email1,email2)

I cant figure out however, how to make the default email field look at the content of 2 fields and put them together.

How do I do this?

thanks,

Tex

Tex,

Hi. well to do this you would probably need to use a SQL Event to manually update the email field within the core/database to add the two fields together. To be honest though I don't believe this is the correct way of going about this.

Can you work from this idea? If not you
will want to update the core from a SQL Statement adding both the regular email and the SMS email.

Within the core you can add extended user properties under Admin, User Accounts, Manage Profile Properties. From here you can create as many custom fields as you would want typically most (good modules at least) can read from all core and core extended profile fields. This way you can link the email field to the standard email field and link your other email field (i.e. for SMS) to the extended field you create. This way you have the data in two seperate fields and other applications should be able to access this day. Additionally,

thanks for the input Chad.  I am going to use Private Messages by Ventrian to allow team members to send SMS.  I will ask Ventrian if I can add another email field.  the problem as I stated before is that I am not a programmer and cant make this type of modification even if it is easy to do.

ok here is one more question if you dont mind.

to put together the SMS field i need the cell phone number (i.e. 5555555555) to combined with the provider email which I will have from a list.  there is a field I am using the user can select from (i.e. bellsouth, AT&T, Verizon) this field then populates the field with (@cingular.com, @mmode.com, etc..) depending on the phone carrier.

How can I add these 2 fields to combine into one within Dynamic Registration?

Then how can I bind this new field with a new extended field I create in normal DNN user profile?

thanks,

Tex

Hi. Well this will be easier in future releases as we are working on some nice client side events that can populate all types of fields that would handle the 5555@domain.com etc... You will also be able to include tokens within HTML tokens along with question events so you will (after they enter their # and a domain) be able to display html that shows 'Your full address is 5555@domain.com' etc...

As far as what to do now.... You will need to use a SQL Event, you will need to find the property definition ID for the field within the core that you want to update. You can usually find this by going to Admin, User Accounts, Manage Profile Properties and if you hover over the edit pencil for each property (or new property you created) you should see something like PropertyDefinitionID/140/ or something like this. This means that the property definition ID is 140...

So at this point you would need to use a Dynamic SQL Event, something like this.

Update UserProfile Set PropertyValue = '$(CellPhoneField)' + '$(DomainField)' Where UserID = $(UserID) and PropertyDefinitionID = 140

So, this query here assumes that the cell phone short field name is CellPhoneField and that the short field name for domain field is DomainField. This query also assumes that the property definition ID within the core that you would like to update is 140.

As far as the SMS Ventrian module I would just let them know that these are core extended fields and they don't have to be pulled from something like Dynamci Registration tables themselves.

Chad,

In trying to figure out a way to avoid using the email field to capture 2 email addresses (email and sms) as you suggested above, I tried to use a module I have to send SMS messages using the User Profile field I created. I ran into a problem where if I put in a form a checkbox list and the user checks off more then one email recipient, the form only sends the SMS email to the first email on the list.

So, I was thinking. Does Dynamic Forms allow me to use/do the following:

1. Use a checkbox listing which is populated by a sql query which loads a Label (i.e. someone's name) and a value (i.e. an email address for SMS). This checkbox list would then allow the users of the form to check off 1 email recipient or many.
2. Use a long text field as the Message component of the email using a Text mode instead of HTML for the message.
3. when Submit is pressed it triggers and email which gets sent to 1 or Many of the email (value) field.

Is this doable with dynamic forms?

thanks,

Tex

#1 wouldn't be a problem at all but as far as #2 are you referring to using a checkbox list as a token within a email completion event? In other words is #2 referring to using it with our module or another component?

Chad,

Sorry I was not more clear.

#2 - I am just referring to a field in a form that would be a long multiline field.  A field you would use for the message part of the email.  I am pretty sure Dynamic Forms has such a field.

#3 - this is the tougher one.  #1 I was referring to a checkbox field which is populated by a query.  You stated that is doable with DF.  However, with this question, I am trying to figure out if the form can have an email event which is triggered upon form Submit which then sends an email to all recipients checked off in the checkbox list (#1).

I am afraid the email event would only send an email to 1 of the email addresses selected on the checkbox list field.

so again #3 is just asking if an email event can send an email to multiple email addresses which were selected from the checkbox list field.

thanks

Tex
