What is the status of bounce back handling?

I have two other newsletter application/services (off DNN) that automatically cull lists of subscribers after X bounces backs.  I find this immeasurably valuable managing lists. Open rates, conversion rates all relative to the total emails.  If the list is 30% bounces then these numbers will be very skewed

Using 'opens' is a start at cleaning a list but not an answer. Jakob Nielsen found 10% of the subscribers save emails intending to read them later - not a group you want to ever drop from a list.

When is can we see this in OptIn?

Lance,

Hi. Unfortunately this feature typically requires direct integration with your email server and not something them our module can control. Once the email goes out we have limited control (only email tracking by putting a web bug in the email) if the email server sends it back because the email failed etc... This would have to be something your email server either executed to update the opt in tables etc... I would actually be interested in knowing any of the specifics (maybe even names or how) the other email applications were handling this because its difficult, especially in a web based solution. Sometimes the email won't bounce back for days etc...

So... What our module can and does do is offers the ability to add a tracking bug to emails. What this can do is add a bug that gets loaded when a user opens the email message. This way when you go and review the the email tracking you will see that 'x' number of users have read the email message. The tracking bug also tracks how many times they have opened the email, the last date/time read, their IP Address etc... The biggest problem here is that (and this has happened before) where Outlook comes out with an update and its possible it determines the tracking URL is there and doesn't show /process the tracking bug unless they add you as a safe sender etc.. Even as it is the bug requires the users enable images in the module so if they never (sometimes in Outlook this happens) where they have to right click to be able to automatically display images etc...

So what we could do would be able to offer a feature that says 'Remove all users from the list who have not read 'x' of the last newsletters' or since 'x' date etc... Then again if their email application was avoiding the tracking bug you could be removing people from the list who have actually read it.

So.... We will continue to research and add features to the Opt In Email module. We are actually getting ready to post a road map for the next release which will include some great features for creating a series of emails for opt in lists and other features to include live content within your site with tokens on newsletters etc...
